The right choice of Geckos aquaculture tank and scene building
Reptile pet market is becoming more and more popular among customers. Among them, the Leopard Geckos is known as the first choice for beginner reptile pets because of its color variety and easy feeding. So how to choose the right breeding space and environment is our first consideration.
First of all for the choice of reptile pet tank.
1. Selection according to the stage of individual development
Seedlings (1-4 months old): small size rearing box (about 19×12.5×7.5cm) is recommended, too much space will lead to hatchlings' nervousness and refusal to eat; if transition is needed 20 gallon (75cm long) tanks can be used, but the aquascape needs to be simplified to reduce the stress.
Sub-adults (4-12 months old): We recommend a medium-sized box (about 45×30×30cm) or a 60×45×30cm glass tank, and gradually add shelter and enrichment facilities.
Adult (12 months old and above): Minimum 60 x 40 x 40cm space required, ideal size is 90 x 60 x 45cm to meet climbing, activity and zoning needs.
2. Space design principles
Length: The length of the tank should be at least 2 times of the body length of the guardian palace to avoid restriction of activities.
Height utilization: Although the Leopard Geckos is a ground-dwelling species, vertical space can enhance the activity, and it is recommended to provide a climbing area with a backdrop or rocks.
Secondly, for the establishment of the breeding environment
Temperature zoning and heat source control: hot and cold zoning: 28-32℃ in the hot zone (during the daytime), 24-26℃ in the cold zone, accurately regulated by the heating pad + thermostat; at night, it can be cooled down to 20-23℃ to simulate the natural temperature difference between day and night. Heat source selection: prioritize the bottom heating pad (covering 1/2 area of the tank)
Dodging and enrichment configuration: Basic dodging: set up at least three dodging holes for hot zone, cold zone and humidification, made of semi-enclosed plastic box or bark, with the diameter of the inlet slightly larger than the size of the Shougong. Advanced Hiding: Add elements such as dead leaves, rock crevices, and low stumps to stimulate natural behaviors (e.g., exploring, molting). Avoid sharp-edged materials and seal seams with hot-melt adhesive when fixing backdrops to prevent insects from escaping. By matching individual sizes, zoning temperature control and scientific enrichment, we can build a rearing environment that meets the physiological needs of the Shamu and is also ornamental.
Bedding material and hygiene management: Safe bedding material: kitchen paper and kraft paper are recommended for hatchlings; terracotta soil or special reptile bedding material can be used for adults; fine sand is prohibited to prevent accidental ingestion. Cleaning Frequency: Clean up feces daily, replace all bedding 1-2 times a month, and change water in the water bowl daily.
Humidity and water settings: Humidity control: overall environmental humidity 40%-60%, humidified hiding areas can be partially raised to 70% to assist molting.
Water basin requirements: use shallow containers (to prevent drowning), placed in cold areas to avoid rapid evaporation.
Special attention should be paid to the fact that the Leopard Geckos has a strong sense of territory and adults must be kept individually, while sub-adults need to be mixed and closely observed for aggressive behavior.
